This comparison gets pitched as a features fight, but the features have mostly converged. The real decision comes down to how much control you want over your hosting stack, and how much time your team has to manage it.
Shopify: speed to launch, less to manage
Shopify's biggest advantage is that hosting, security patching, and PCI compliance are simply handled. For a business that wants to focus on merchandising and marketing rather than server maintenance, that trade-off is usually worth the monthly fee and transaction costs.
WooCommerce: more control, more responsibility
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, which means near-total control over hosting, plugins, and custom functionality โ and near-total responsibility for keeping all of it updated and secure. It tends to suit businesses that already have WordPress infrastructure or need deep custom logic that Shopify's app ecosystem can't cleanly support.
Our rule of thumb with clients: if you want to spend your time selling, choose Shopify. If you need the store to do something genuinely unusual โ a complex configurator, an unusual subscription model, tight ERP integration โ WooCommerce's flexibility is worth the extra maintenance overhead.
