Shopify Speed Optimization: A Practical Checklist

Apps are the most common reason Shopify stores slow down. Here's the audit process we run before touching a single line of theme code.

A slow Shopify store is almost never Shopify's fault โ€” the platform's own infrastructure is fast. Slowness comes from what's layered on top of it: apps, uncompressed images, and bloated theme code.

Audit apps before anything else

Every installed app injects its own script, and most stores accumulate apps faster than they remove them. We start every speed project by disabling apps one at a time and measuring the impact โ€” it's tedious, but it reliably surfaces the two or three scripts doing the most damage.

From there: switch product images to a responsive, WebP-first setup, lazy-load everything below the fold, defer non-critical scripts until after page load, and trim the theme's JavaScript bundle down to what the store actually uses. Most stores we work on see PageSpeed scores move from the 50s or 60s into the 90s using exactly this sequence โ€” no theme rebuild required.
