7 WordPress Maintenance Tasks Most Agencies Skip

"Set it and forget it" is the most expensive phrase in WordPress. Most of the sites we inherit from other agencies aren't broken — they're just quietly accumulating debt that eventually shows up as a hack, a crash, or an unexplainable slowdown.
The checklist we run monthly
Beyond the obvious core and plugin updates, we audit installed plugins for ones that are no longer maintained, clean up post revisions and transients in the database, test that backups actually restore (not just that they exist), review the users list for stale admin accounts, check uptime and SSL expiry, and re-run a broken link scan.
The database cleanup step is the one people skip most often, and it's also the one with an outsized effect on admin-side speed once a site has been live for a couple of years and accumulated tens of thousands of orphaned revisions.
None of this is glamorous work, but it's the difference between a WordPress site that stays reliable for five years and one that needs an emergency rebuild after eighteen months.
