"Personalization" still sounds like something only Amazon can afford. In practice, most of the value comes from three lightweight signals that any site can capture: where a visitor came from, what device they're on, and what they've looked at in this session.

Start with intent, not identity

You don't need to know who a visitor is to personalize their experience โ€” you need to know why they're there. A visitor arriving from a "Shopify migration" ad should see different proof points than one arriving from an organic search for "web design agency near me." Mapping a handful of traffic sources to a handful of homepage variants gets most businesses 80% of the benefit with none of the complexity.

Let AI handle the long tail

Where AI earns its keep is the long tail of combinations a human team could never write by hand โ€” dozens of landing page variants, dynamically generated FAQ answers, or a chat assistant that adapts its questions based on what a visitor has already read. The goal isn't to replace your messaging, it's to make sure the right piece of it shows up at the right moment.

Measure it the boring way: pick one metric (usually consultation requests or add-to-cart rate), run the personalized version against a control for a few weeks, and only keep it if the numbers back it up. AI makes personalization cheaper to build โ€” it doesn't make it exempt from testing.
